Child refusing to leave playground while parent calmly encourages transition

What to Say When Your Child Refuses to Leave (Park, Playground, Screen Time)

You say:

“It’s time to go.”

Your child says:

“No.”

And suddenly, everything becomes harder.

Why leaving is so hard

For a child, transitions are not small.

They’re abrupt endings to something meaningful.

Your child is:

  • deeply engaged
  • not mentally prepared
  • emotionally invested

So the reaction isn’t defiance.

It’s frustration.

What to say instead

Help your child prepare instead of forcing:

  • “We’re leaving in 5 minutes.”
  • “Two more minutes, then we go.”
  • “One last turn.”

This gives the brain time to adjust.

In the moment

When resistance comes:

  • “You don’t want to leave.”
  • “That’s hard.”
  • “Let’s do it together.”

Avoid

  • sudden endings
  • long explanations
  • power struggles

Small shift, big difference

Preparation reduces resistance.

Not perfectly.

But consistently.
