What to Say When Your Child Refuses to Leave (Park, Playground, Screen Time)
You say:
“It’s time to go.”
Your child says:
“No.”
And suddenly, everything becomes harder.
Why leaving is so hard
For a child, transitions are not small.
They’re abrupt endings to something meaningful.
Your child is:
- deeply engaged
- not mentally prepared
- emotionally invested
So the reaction isn’t defiance.
It’s frustration.
What to say instead
Help your child prepare instead of forcing:
- “We’re leaving in 5 minutes.”
- “Two more minutes, then we go.”
- “One last turn.”
This gives the brain time to adjust.
In the moment
When resistance comes:
- “You don’t want to leave.”
- “That’s hard.”
- “Let’s do it together.”
Avoid
- sudden endings
- long explanations
- power struggles
Small shift, big difference
Preparation reduces resistance.
Not perfectly.
But consistently.
