Founder of ChildUnderstanding
Ballerup, Denmark
Hi, I’m John Slater. I created ChildUnderstanding
I’m 48 years old, a stepfather, and the founder of Printbyorder.dk, a Danish business based in Ballerup.
This project started from my own experience. As a parent, I found it surprisingly difficult to find practical, easy-to-understand help when dealing with children’s emotions and behavior. Most books and resources felt too theoretical, too complex, or simply not usable in real everyday situations.
Through conversations with family members who work professionally with children, it became clear that many parents face the same challenge, they need guidance that is both grounded in research and easy to apply in daily life.
I’m also locally politically active in Ballerup, where I’ve seen firsthand how many parents struggle to access clear and helpful guidance.
That’s why I created ChildUnderstanding: to offer simple, practical guides that translate child development research into clear, usable tools for real families.
What ChildUnderstanding is
ChildUnderstanding is a digital brand focused on helping parents better understand their children’s emotions, behavior, and development in everyday life.
All content and guides on this site are written by me and are based on publicly available research in child development, combined with practical everyday experience.
Why this site exists
Children are not small adults. Their brains are still developing, and many of the skills adults rely on, such as impulse control, emotional regulation, and perspective, develop gradually throughout childhood.
When parents understand what is happening beneath a child’s behavior, situations that once felt like constant conflict can become opportunities for connection, guidance, and learning.
ChildUnderstanding aims to bridge the gap between research and everyday parenting by presenting ideas in a clear and practical way.
Our approach
The content and guides on this site are inspired by research in areas such as:
- Child development
- Emotional regulation
- Attachment and relationships
- Early childhood psychology
Sources and inspiration include publicly available research and materials from institutions such as:
- Harvard Center on the Developing Child
- World Health Organization (WHO)
- UNICEF
This site is not affiliated with these organizations.
The focus is not on “perfect parenting,” but on helping parents understand their child’s perspective and respond with calmness, clarity, and consistency.
The guide: Understanding Your Child
The guide “Understanding Your Child – A Science-Based Guide to Emotions, Behavior, and Cooperation” was created to make important insights from child development research practical and accessible.
Inside the guide, parents learn:
- Why children react strongly in certain situations
- How emotions work in a developing brain
- How connection and structure support development
- Practical tools for everyday conflicts and transitions
The aim is not to provide perfect solutions, but to offer insights that help parents feel more confident and supported in daily life.
